After the excitment of expensive and supposedly well thought out commercials that cost millions of dollars for 30 seconds on air during the Super Bowl, I am asked to think of what makes a great commercial. In my opinion, a great ad has producers and writers that effectively attracts the targeted audience. As to who created the message, it shouldn't matter as long as the identity of the product is clear by the end of the commercial. I mean, what's the point of spending millions of dollars in production, if people don't even get what you're attempting to sell or make known? Futhermore, I don't care either way of sponsers of television events because I chose not to make product decisions based on who sponsered an awards show or a sports event.
When it comes to the technique involved in the commercial I really don't care if it's a story or comedy or has a serious undertone...as long as the approach and technique correctly correspond to the product/idea/message. For example, you don't want to run a commercial about drunk driving and be comedic about it, that's just plain wrong and in a way pathetic. Personally, I don't appreciate raunchy humor, that's just really disgusting and inappropriate.
As to targeting auidence, I think it'll be hard to find a product that will please everyone and thus it will be difficult to create a commercial that will attract and get the attention of "everyone." So, I think the smart approach is to sell your product to the audience that will more likely buy your product and do your best to "wow" them.
However, it is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE for a company to run a commercial that is offensive to one group of people, even if it works really well with another group. No matter what, that is just morally wrong. Especially in the United States when rasicism is SUPPOSED to "non-existent". It is never right to offend people, regardless of how much money you make off it. Cause then you are profiting on defacing a group of people. What an unethical choice.
It is also nice those rare times (compared to how many commercial one see when watching television) that there is an ad against smoking or drunk driving or taking drugs. Now that's something I would listen to and consider. It's nice to know that there are some morals left in America.
